Ordering a birthday cake is one of those tasks that feels simple until you are doing it at 9pm the night before, discovering that the place you had in mind needs three days' notice and does not answer the phone.

This is a practical guide to getting a whole cake in Pattaya — what to order, how far ahead, how to get it home in one piece, and how to work out how much cake you actually need.

How much cake do you need?

This is the question people get wrong most often, in both directions.

A 2lb cake — roughly 900g — serves 10 to 14 people as a proper dessert portion, or 16 to 20 as a small slice with coffee at the end of a meal.

Two rules of thumb that will not let you down:

If the cake is the dessert, count on 10 to 12 servings from a 2lb cake.
If there is other food and the cake is ceremonial — candles, a photo, one slice each — a 2lb cake stretches comfortably to 18.

For a party of 25 or more you want two cakes rather than one larger one. Two 2lb cakes cut faster, offer people a choice, and travel better than a single heavy tier.

Cheesecake with a chocolate sauce over the top. The compromise option when half the room wants chocolate and half wants cheesecake.

The one to order when you do not know the room. Carrot cake is spiced rather than sweet, and it converts people who claim not to like cake.

Blackforest Cake — ฿950

Chocolate, cherry, cream. The traditional celebration cake, and it photographs well, which matters more at a birthday than anyone admits.

Coconut Chocolate Cake — ฿995

Chocolate with coconut through it. Richer than it sounds — small slices.

Magnum Chocolate Cake — ฿1,095

The most chocolate on the list. If the birthday is for someone who has strong opinions about chocolate, this is the one.

How far ahead to order

Whole cakes need notice. They are not sitting in the fridge waiting — they are made for you.

Order at least 48 hours ahead. More for a weekend, and considerably more around New Year and major holidays when everyone in Pattaya has the same idea at the same time.

If you need something today, that is a different order: a slice cake at ฿135 to ฿185, or a box of individual cakes, both of which are available immediately.

Getting it home in one piece

A whole cake is the most fragile thing you will ever carry on a motorbike, and Pattaya's roads are not gentle.

Collect it by car if you possibly can. Flat floor, boot or footwell, nothing on top. A cake box on a motorbike hook swings, and a cheesecake that has swung for fifteen minutes arrives against one side of its box.

Keep it flat and keep it cool. Cheesecakes in particular do not enjoy a Thai afternoon. Straight into a fridge on arrival, out twenty minutes before serving.

Do not stack anything on the box. Obvious, and it still happens.

If you are having it delivered, be there to receive it. A cake left at a gate in April is not a cake by the time you find it.

Candles, messages and the practical bits

Bring your own candles — supermarkets and 7-Eleven both stock them, and it saves a conversation about what will and will not stick into a cheesecake topping.

If you want something written on the cake, ask when you order rather than on collection. It is not always possible depending on the finish — a chocolate ganache takes writing well, a cheesecake with a fruit topping does not.

Take a knife, plates and a serving slice if the party is somewhere without a kitchen. This is the thing everyone forgets and it turns cutting a cake into an event nobody wanted.

Because of the notice period, it is worth placing the order and then confirming the collection time directly — the phone number and LINE contact are both in the app.

Ordering direct rather than through a delivery app matters more on a cake than on anything else, simply because of the amount involved. On a ฿950 cheesecake the difference between the direct price and the app price is not loose change.

A note on the free brownie

Any order over ฿450 gets a free chocolate brownie added automatically. Every whole cake clears that threshold, which means every cake order arrives with a brownie attached. Consider it the cake-orderer's fee for doing the organising.
